A custom layout starts with a question: what should the visitor do on this page — call, add an item to the basket, or leave an enquiry? The order of the blocks, the size of the buttons and what is visible before any scrolling are all built around that action. You see and approve the layout before the coding starts, so changes at this stage cost nothing but time.

A common story: someone buys a template and then keeps paying for months to strip out what does not belong — blocks their business never needed and someone else’s demo photos. Reworking a stranger’s template often takes longer than drawing your own.

What a bad mobile version looks like: you have to pinch to zoom the text, the number in the header is not tappable, and the “Order” button hides behind another block. Nobody writes to support about it — they just close the tab. Search also weighs mobile usability, so such a site loses positions too.

A simple self-test: open your current site on a phone and try, with one hand, to find a price and place a call. If it takes longer than half a minute, the responsive side is not right.

What not to expect from an admin panel: it lets you change content, not redraw the design. Adding a tenth product takes two minutes; building a brand-new block with new logic is developer work. That is deliberate — otherwise one careless move could break the site.

The riskiest option is a site on a home-made system that only its author understands. While the author answers, all is well; the moment they disappear, every comma becomes a problem.

An honest limitation: if the catalogue holds thousands of items, filling in every card by hand is a large job in itself. Usually we import the bulk of the products from your price list and write up the key items and categories in detail. We agree the scope at the briefing so there are no surprises later.

The most useful thing you can do in advance is to gather the logo, real photos and an up-to-date price list into one folder. It shortens the work far more than you would expect.

A classic mistake is a form with five required fields, job title and address included. Every extra field costs you enquiries: someone on a phone simply will not fill it in. A name and a phone number are enough at the start; the rest comes up in conversation.

Before launch, send an enquiry yourself from your own phone and check that the email arrives and does not land in spam. We always do this, but an extra check on your side has never hurt anyone.

What basic SEO does not do: on its own it will not put the site at the top of search results. It is like valid car documents — you cannot drive without them, but they add no speed. Positions come when regular work on queries and content is built on that foundation.

If promotion is in your plans, mention it at the briefing, before the design stage. The page structure will then be built around what your clients actually search for — cheaper than rebuilding a finished site.

There is no technical language — markup and content systems are our concern, and from you we need facts about the business. The brief is free, and you owe nothing after it.

From you we need a list of services or product groups, a few links to competitor sites with a note on what you like and dislike there, and a clear idea of the main action: a call, an enquiry or an order in the basket. If some of that does not exist yet, just say so — we will help put it into words during the call.

The stage usually drags when the decision belongs to several people — the owner, a marketer, an accountant — and each adds their own view on a different day. It goes fastest when everyone whose opinion matters takes part in the same conversation.

You end up with a document that says which pages the site consists of and what works on it, plus the price and the timeline. Then comes the contract — and no “we thought that was included” halfway through the work.

Once the order of blocks is agreed, we design the home page in colour: it sets the style, and the inner pages follow it.

From you we need a logo in any form, even a photo of a business card, your brand colours if they exist, and real photos of your work, products or team. No logo is not a problem: we design without it, and branding is dealt with as a separate step. After that we need your comments — plainly what you like and what you do not.

Comments usually come in two or three waves: a big one first, then small details. The slowest version is when they arrive one at a time every day — “move the button lower”, and two days later “make the font bigger”. Collect them into one list and send them together; that saves days.

Design is the longest stage in almost every project, because the look of the whole site is decided here. The approved design is then fixed: coding starts from it, and later changes cost noticeably more time.

At this stage we need little from you, but on time: the mailbox where enquiries should arrive, access to payment and delivery services if it is a shop, and answers to small questions. They are usually minor — “show the phone number in the header or only on the contacts page” — but work on that particular part waits until you answer.

The classic reason deadlines slip is new wishes mid-way: add another section, bolt on a calculator, make a second language version. Nothing forbids it — such things are simply priced separately, so the dates for the rest stay intact.

You get a working site on a test address: click through the menu, open the pages, send a test enquiry. It still looks empty — texts and products arrive at the next stage.

If there are no texts and nobody to write them, say so at once: we write them ourselves, and from you we need only the facts and a check before publishing.

This is the stage that stalls most often, and almost never because of the studio: the client simply never gets round to collecting the materials. So do not wait until everything is ready — hand it over in parts, section by section. Then the filling runs alongside the gathering instead of after it.

By the end of this stage the site can already be shown to people: pages are filled, prices are in place, the catalogue is sorted into categories. What is left is to see how all of it behaves on real devices.

From you we need one thing: walk your client’s path from your own phone — find a price, fill in the form, try to call. You know your buyers better than we do and will notice what would never occur to us. Comments are easiest to send as a list with a screenshot and the name of the phone, so we can reproduce the problem right away.

We pay separate attention to things that break quietly: an enlarged font in the phone settings, a price table, a menu on a tablet held sideways. Such details are invisible on a desktop, yet they are exactly what clients trip over.

A tip: test on the phone you use every day, not on the newest one in the family. Clients arrive on very different devices, and an old budget phone shows what a flagship will never reveal.

Then we move the site, connect the security certificate — the little padlock next to the address — and open the pages to search engines.

From you we need access to the domain and hosting if they already exist, and about an hour for the handover. It runs as a video call with a shared screen: we change a text, replace a photo, add a product — on your own pages, not on examples. Ask questions as we go; that is the most useful part of the call.

The most common delay at launch is access to a domain registered years ago by a former contractor or an acquaintance. Recovering those logins sometimes takes longer than the move itself. So it is worth hunting for them during the content stage, not on launch day.

The site ends up live on its own address and every login is in your hands. For the first weeks we stay close: small questions about the admin panel are sorted as they come, and after that you can move on to support, SEO or advertising.

A landing page is one long page read from top to bottom like a story: what you offer, why it solves the problem, what it costs, what to do next. There is almost no menu, because there is nowhere to go — everything leads to a single action: an enquiry, a call, or a call-back request. That is why such a page usually brings more enquiries than a multi-page site.

Not your option if you have a dozen services and each is searched for separately: on one page they get in each other’s way, and search engines have nothing to show for the different queries. In that case look at a corporate site. And if you have many products the customer picks from, that is an online shop.

Where to start: state in one sentence what the visitor should do on the page — call, leave a number, or book a slot. If there are two or three such actions, the landing page will have to be split, and it is better to settle that before the design stage.

The signs: every day you repeat the same explanation by phone, every proposal starts with describing the company from scratch, and when someone asks where they can read about you there is nothing to show. The result is a site with sections: services on separate pages, about the company, work or projects, contacts with company details. Each page covers one service, so you can send it as a link in an email and promote it separately in search — people look for a specific service in their own words, not for a company.

Not your option if selling happens through a cart: when the customer picks the item, sees stock and pays on the site, you need an online shop. The reverse also holds — if you have a single service and visitors arrive from ads, a corporate site is more than you need and a landing page will do.

Start with a list of pages: write out your services the way clients name them, not the way they appear in your price list. That list becomes the structure of the site, and from there it is easier both to quote and to promote.

A shop means a catalogue with filters, a product page with price and specifications, a cart, card payment and a choice of delivery branch. We build it on OpenCart or WordPress: both are widely used, so you are not tied to one contractor, and afterwards you change products and prices yourself in the admin panel.

Not your option if you have about thirty items and orders are agreed by phone anyway — measurements, installation, custom quotes. The most useful thing to do before starting is to tidy up the price list: names, prices, specifications and photos in a single table. How long filling the catalogue takes depends mostly on its condition.

Guessing here costs more than half an hour of conversation.

In the briefing we go through where your clients come from today, what they ask first, and what action they should take on the site. The format follows from that: sometimes a simple business card page with contacts, sometimes a corporate site with sections, sometimes a catalogue with enquiries and no online payment. The briefing is free and commits you to nothing.

A project like this differs not in design but in logic: roles and permissions, moderation, search across a large body of content, speed with thousands of pages. So it starts not with a mock-up but with a description of scenarios — who does what on the site and what each role sees. The work takes longer and costs more than an ordinary site, and that is worth planning for from the start.

Not your option if you simply expect a lot of pages: a hundred articles or services is an ordinary corporate site with a well-planned structure. And if you are the only one adding content, accounts and a forum will only add moderation work and give nothing back.

Where to start: describe in plain words one day in the life of your user on the site — why they came, what they did, what brought them back. If there is no answer yet, a portal is premature and it is wiser to begin with a simpler format.
